U4N Guide: Making D4 Escalations Work for Endgame Gear

For many players, the biggest challenge with seasonal progression is not finding something to do but finding something that advances several goals at once. After Patch 3.1.3, Escalation Nightmare Dungeons are a stronger option for players farming D4 items while also trying to finish Season Journey objectives.

The update allows Escalation Nightmare Dungeons to count toward the Rank III “Set Fire to the Beacons” objective. That is a useful improvement for anyone who already spends time collecting D4 items through higher-level Nightmare content and does not want to stop their farming rotation just to complete a separate seasonal requirement.

Escalations Now Fit the Season Journey

Before the update, there was a strange disconnect between Escalation farming and the Season Journey. Escalations could offer valuable endgame rewards, but players could still find themselves making little progress toward certain seasonal objectives.

Patch 3.1.3 addresses part of that problem by allowing qualifying Escalations with the Ruptures affix to contribute to “Set Fire to the Beacons.”

The result is straightforward. If you already enjoy Escalation content, you can continue playing it without feeling that your Season Journey progress is being left behind.

Think in Terms of Progression Layers

A good endgame routine usually involves more than one target. You might need better equipment, crafting materials, seasonal progress, and resources for your next upgrade.

Escalation Nightmare Dungeons can connect several of these systems. The activity takes you through three consecutive dungeons before a final boss encounter, giving the entire run a clear progression structure.

The War Plans Tree can also overlap with this process. Certain activity paths can unlock shortcuts and additional elite spawns, so players who understand the available branches can get more value from the same farming time.

This makes Escalations particularly appealing once your character is strong enough to complete them consistently.

Materials Are Part of the Reward

Gear is only one part of endgame progression. Crafting resources can become a major bottleneck once you start upgrading higher-quality equipment.

Escalation runs can provide Obducite, Veiled Crystals, and Iron Chunks while you work through the dungeon chain. These materials help support the broader crafting and upgrade system, meaning the value of a run does not disappear just because the item drops are disappointing.

Pandemonium Fragments add another reason to keep farming. They can be used as part of Mythic Unique crafting through the Horadric Cube, making them relevant for players chasing some of the strongest equipment options.

Use Branching Choices Carefully

The Branching Pathways system gives Escalation runs another layer of flexibility. Players can encounter multiple portal modifiers and choose options that fit their current goals.

If you are short on gold, a gold-focused modifier can make more sense. If you are looking for stronger equipment, another option may be preferable. The same idea applies to gems and other useful rewards.

The important thing is to avoid treating every portal choice as something that can be clicked without thought. A few seconds spent checking the available options can help make the entire run more useful.

Astaroth Reignited Is the Final Test

Completing the three-stage chain on Torment I or higher can lead to Astaroth Reignited. The encounter is a significant part of the Escalation payoff because it can provide a large collection of Ancestral gear and crafting materials.

That final fight also gives the activity a natural endpoint. Instead of endlessly clearing unrelated dungeons, you are working through a defined sequence with a clear reward at the end.

There is a small technical issue worth remembering, though. After defeating Astaroth Reignited, wait for the official completion notification before leaving. The safer approach is to give the game roughly 10 to 30 seconds before teleporting back to town, since leaving too quickly can prevent War Plan credit from registering.

Prepare Your Sigils Before Farming

Escalation Sigils are made through the Horadric Cube by combining five regular Nightmare Dungeon keys. This means preparation starts with your normal Nightmare Dungeon farming.

If you know you want to spend a longer session in Escalations, build up enough materials beforehand. Constantly stopping to gather more keys can make the activity feel much less efficient.

For newer endgame characters, this also provides a natural progression path. Run standard Nightmare content, collect what you need, craft Escalation Sigils, and then move into the harder chain once your build is ready.

A More Practical Farming Strategy

The real advantage of the patch is that Escalations can now support several objectives simultaneously. You can progress the Season Journey while collecting crafting materials, building War Plans progress, targeting specific loot, and preparing for the Astaroth encounter.

That does not mean every player should run Escalations exclusively. Standard Nightmare Dungeons can still make sense when you need specific resources or are not yet comfortable with the harder content.

What changes is the opportunity cost. If an Escalation already fits your build and farming goals, you no longer have to worry as much about losing seasonal progress by choosing it.

For players comparing their current build against their next upgrades, looking at available diablo 4 gear can help clarify which equipment slots still need attention before committing to higher Torment content.

The best approach is to make each Escalation session serve several purposes. Once the run contributes to seasonal objectives, materials, War Plans progress, and gearing at the same time, the endgame loop becomes much easier to manage.
